Our name

Why we call it The Max.

Every school paper needs a name. Ours comes from the saint whose name is on our school. St. Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan friar who believed the press could carry the Gospel to ordinary people. In 1922 he launched a monthly magazine, the Knight of the Immaculata. Five years later he founded Niepokalanów, a friary outside Warsaw that grew into a major Catholic publishing center, and in 1938 it went on the air with its own radio station.

In 1941, as a prisoner at Auschwitz, he volunteered to die in the place of a man he did not know, a husband and father. The Church canonized him in 1982 and honors him as a patron of journalists, families, and prisoners.

So The Kolbe Max carries his name and his standard: tell the truth, tell it well, and use it to bring people together.

Cougar Studios

Kolbe is live on every screen.

This fall Kolbe launched Cougar Studios, the name for everything our school creates: the new kolbecaths.org, our Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok accounts, and this newsletter. Student hosts, filmmakers, and writers are joining the crew, so expect event recaps, student-run videos, and school news as it happens.

Students: want in?
